While there are benefits which employers are required to pay by law, there are many ways which employers can add to and interpret these benefits which can substantially change the working conditions and contracts for their employees.

It is especially hard to find a good contract with everything included if you are a chauffeur. Because chauffeurs often work such irregular hours and can be employed in such a variety of ways, different limo hire companies offer different employment contracts with different inclusions.

For example, chauffeurs can generally take unpaid leave at any time, but some companies make their chauffeurs earn their leave through service. For example, a chauffeur may have to work with a certain limo hire company for a year before getting scheduled holiday time and sick leave. Then, as they are with the company longer, the amount of holiday time and sick leave they get increases accordingly.

Also, because chauffeurs get paid an hourly rate and this changes week to week, their holiday pay is then calculated by adding their earnings for the year and dividing it by 52 to work out the average weekly earnings.

Some limo hire companies also offer retirement programs and medical benefits depending on the size of the business. However, smaller limo hire companies still have to adhere to the legal requirements for having employees and this can sometimes be hard. For this reason, limo hire companies seek out companies who will employ their chauffeurs and pay all of their expenses and then lease these chauffeurs back to the limo hire companies for a percentage of their earnings.

This is a good way for a smaller limo hire company to control the costs of their employees, until they grow and the percentage of earnings they pay to the leasing company is more than the amount they would pay in employee expenses and they can hire their chauffeurs outright.

Wherever chauffeurs work, they need to be sure they are looked after, not only with regards to their earnings, but also in case something goes wrong and they need support from their employer.
